Indian Air Force Set To Get 48 More Mi-17 Transport Helicopters This Year

Russian arms supplier Rosoboronexport's CEO Alexander Mikheev said India has more than 300 helicopters belonging to the Mi-8 and Mi-17 family, which are deployed in troop and arms transport, fire support, convoy escort, patrol, and search-and-rescue (SAR) missions. He said India knows their specifications well. Mikheev said Russia and India are holding talks with a view to sign a contract for 48 (Mi-17V5) helicopters and the techno-commercial negotiations are set to commence. "We hope that we will reach an agreement before the end of this year," he told a select group of journalists here on the sidelines of Russia's premier air show MAKS 2017. Last year, Russia had handed over to India the final batch of three Mi-17V5 military transport helicopters under a previously signed contract with Rosoboronexport, a company of the Rostec State Corporation, that entailed a total of 151 units of the Mi-17V-5 helicopter, produced by the Kazan Helicopter Plant. South Korea Asks to Increase Its Firepower

The President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, has asked the U.S. to open negotiations that would allow South Korea to build more powerful ballistic missiles in order to counter an increasingly aggressive North Korea. On Friday, the government in Pyongyang fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), its second this month, that flew about 45 minutes straight up and crashed into the sea off Japan some 620 miles away. U.S. national security advisor H.R. McMaster confirmed early Saturday that Washington had accepted Moon’s offer, and would begin negotiations shortly. The decision is a remarkable change of direction for Moon, who came to office just two months ago. Moon campaigned on a platform that favored dialogue with North Korea. He’d also opposed the U.S. missile defense system, called THAAD, that was aimed at countering a North Korean threat. But on Saturday Moon asked his government to work with the U.S. to temporarily deploy the full THAAD system. The move will likely upse

General Warns U.S., Allies Ready to Unleash “Overwhelming Force” Against North Korea

The United States flew two supersonic bombers over the Korean peninsula and tested out its missile defense system as a warning to North Korea after it conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile that apparently proved its ability to strike the mainland U.S. Just in case the message wasn’t clear, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces warned that the United States and its allies are ready to “respond with rapid, lethal, and overwhelming force at a time and place of our choosing.” Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy was sure to point out that while “diplomacy remains the lead” it is important to “showcase our unwavering commitment while planning for the worst-case scenario.” The United States also said it carried out a successful missile defense test in the Pacific Ocean mere days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country’s latest test demonstrated its capacity to strike the entire continental United States. Analysts say data from the

US and Georgia hold military drills, as Russia shows off naval strength

Image
The US and Georgia have launched their biggest ever joint military exercises, as the Caucasus nation seeks to push its bid to join Nato. US Vice-President Mike Pence will visit this week and is expected to back the plan, which Russia strongly opposes. Georgia and Russia have had fractious relations over two breakaway republics and fought a brief war in 2008. Russia staged its own show of force on Sunday with President Putin joining a naval display in St Petersburg. The US-Georgia military drills, dubbed Noble Partner, involve some 1,600 US and 800 Georgian troops. The US has also deployed M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks and M2 Bradley infantry vehicles for the exercises, which will go on until 12 August. A number of other nations, including the UK, are involved. Georgian Defence Minister Levan Izoria said the "unprecedented" exercises would "make clear the support for Georgia by the Nato member states, especially the US". Although Georgia is not a member of N

Russia shows off its largest warships at Navy Day parade as tensions with West heighten

Forty warships and submarines, including two of Russia’s largest nuclear-powered vessels, were on show at the Navy Day parade in St. Petersburg on Sunday, the biggest naval show Russia has put up in recent years. Attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the parade was described by the state-run media as “the first principle naval parade in the newest Russia history.” The event comes amid heightened tensions with the West, on the heels of the US Senate approving new sanctions against Russia, and is aimed at reminding the rest of the world that Russia is a maritime force the be reckoned with. Russia's history is marked by numerous victories of the country's "fearless navy," Mr Putin said at the parade. "The country's status as a mighty maritime power was earned by the courage of seamen and navy officers," he said. “Today the navy not only tackles tasks traditional for it – it also rises to new challenges and contributes to the fight against ter
